Rules worth knowing

  • Get a client’s OK in writing before you post their photo, and tell them where it will appear.
  • Before-and-after photos should be your own work, on the same client, in the same light, with no filters or retouching.
  • Share only real reviews, word for word. Don’t pay for good ones, and a review from staff or family has to say so.
  • If you give a creator a free service for a post, they have to say so in the post, for example with the paid partnership label. Tagging you isn’t enough.
  • Use music cleared for business. TikTok business accounts get the Commercial Music Library, and on Instagram and Facebook, business accounts can use Meta’s Sound Collection. Trending songs from the general library aren’t cleared for brands.
  • Post the price you’ll charge. If it’s a “from” price, say what changes it, like hair length or an extra color.

Do it yourself or hire a social media manager?

A social media manager

  • Photographs and films your work in the salon
  • Answers comments and messages
  • Can run your paid ads
  • Costs an hourly rate or a monthly fee

You, with SocialRobot

  • Reads your services and prices from your website
  • Turns an opening into a post the same morning
  • Publishes to Instagram, Facebook and TikTok in each format
  • Free plan; Robot from $19 a month

Questions

How often should a salon post on social media?

The typical salon posts 3.1 times a week on Instagram and 1.3 times on TikTok. Three Instagram posts and one or two TikToks a week is a pace most salons can keep, plus a quick post whenever an opening comes up.

What should a salon post on Instagram?

The week’s openings, new work, your services and prices, the team, and aftercare tips. Ask before you post a client’s photo. The post ideas page has examples you can open in SocialRobot.

How do I fill a last-minute cancellation?

Post it as soon as you know, with the time, the service, the price and how to book. Keep a waiting list too, and message the people on it first.

Is TikTok worth it for a salon?

It’s worth a try. The typical salon gets 3,104 views per TikTok, about three times the typical small business, with 4.1% engagement. A short video of a cut, a color or a set of nails being done is enough.

Is there a free salon content calendar?

Yes. The calendar page lists the next 12 months of dates that fill appointment books, like the holidays, Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day, with a post idea and the day to post each, as a CSV you can open in Google Sheets.

Does SocialRobot write the posts for me?

Robot suggests posts from your website, your photos and the way you write, and you decide what goes out. Robot comes with Starter ($19 a month) and Pro ($29). The Free plan schedules posts you write yourself.
